New Years Camp 09 Slide Show

New Years Camp 09

We arrived at the club this morning to the parking lot being a literal skating rink.

Eventually by the time we went sailing at noon it had warmed up and it was relatively decent on the water.

11 sailors left the dock and we had a good practice working on start drills as well as mark rounding.

We had a 6kt south easterly for a 2 hour session. Most of the team's feet were numb by the time we went in .

The next important call was to either go hsve a hot shower right away or hold off, (too quick a thaw out in the hot shower causes pain and itching in the hands and feet!)

2 more days for the camp then load the trailer for Florida.

Day 2 Christmas Camp

We had a bit of a different crew out today for the 2nd day of our camp.

Kevin Black (BC Sailing Coach) made a guest appearance.

Ben Scott , Joanna Moore and Alex Shepard were new .

Luke and Alanna were back from the first day.

We started the day with hard rain and a solid easterly.

Then as we launched at noon it died down and the rain subsided.

We ran a number of races and drills then the wind died almost completley.

Kevin mentioned that the forcast was for a good westerly and just as he said it the wind filled in from the west.

It picked up quickly and hail came with it.

Moments later it was blowing 25 kts and a few boats were upside down and Kevin had broken his mast.

Alanna and Luke stayed out for one more lap and got plenty cold but had a good sail in!

Christmas Camp 08

Well its been quite a few weeks with about 2 !/2 feet of snow falling from the middle of December till right before our camp started.

I walked over to the sea bus from the North Shore and Jen picked me up on the other side, way too much snow on the north shore!

The first day was called off due to too much snow on the ground.
We did make it out on the 28th and were greeted with moments of sunshine and a nice 8 kt easterly.

Kevin , Alanna, Luke , Jaime, Alex H and Alex N made it out .

We sailed for a few hours before everyone got too cold then in for some hot soup.

We will do another day then wait for the New Years Camp to start on the 2nd to the 4th.

Mike wins again

The Sydney Olympic Regatta has just finished, a quote from scuttlebutt-

"A mixture of Beijing Olympians and aspiring new young guns
took honours at the ISAF Grade 1 Sydney International Regatta, which
hosted 220 entrants amid the Olympic and invited classes. Michael Leigh (CAN) in the Laser Class
overcame a serious challenge from Javier Hernandez (ESP), ultimately beating out his fellow Beijing Olympian"

The Christmas camps are next for the team training.

New Coaches Office

With the help of Cris Cowan , Jen Spalding, Kevin Black and Chris the Ausi we did a lot of work to gut the Coaches office then re drywall, move electrical , replace desk and couch and generally do over the whole thing.

Were happy to have a well sorted office now and its getting plenty of use in our planning season.

Sunny Training Days in November

The skies cleared and we ended up with light air and a lot of starting practice as well a boat handling. 18 sailors got off the dock, an excellent turn out! This was the first day of fitness after sailing with Tamara, which gives us three sessions a week for the team.

Blue Nose / Club Champs

Again this year we used the Blue Nose regatta hosted by the Kits YC as our club champs for the Lasers and Radials.

We had a total of 16 sailors compete over the weekend .

The breeze was decent on the Saturday and real light on the Sunday. The race commitee did a good job getting races off each day .

Alanna was dominant in the Radials with 5 firsts and dropping a 3rd in the last race. Joanna Moore was a solid 2nd , finishing with a 2,1.

Natalia sealed the all girl top 3 with good results all weekend. Jaime and Alberto filled out the top 5.

In the Lasers Ricardo and Luke battled at the front all weekend with Ricky finishing on top of the ex world champion.

Alex , Kyle and Kevin rounded out the top 5 for the Club Champs scoring.

This was our last regatta till the new year , the end of the year banquet is coming up November 25th.

See you there
